Why the wrong journal costs more than the wrong wording

Consider the arithmetic. A desk rejection on scope costs one to four weeks and tells you almost nothing. A rejection after full review costs the 8 to 18 weeks a first decision typically takes, plus the emotional tax of reading three referee reports on a paper that was never going to fit. Published papers commonly survive two to four submissions, so the difference between a matched first target and an aspirational one is frequently half a year of a candidature or a promotion cycle.
